Introduction to inertial frame of reference:

How do we locate a point in a room? To do so we should choose an origin from which we measure the distances along the room's length, breadth and height. If we focus our attention on a corner of the room and the lines that pass along length, breadth and height of the room we can easily get the picture of what is known as Coordinate axes. A system of coordinate axes about which the position or motion of an object can be described is called a frame of reference. The Cartesian coordinate system named after Rene Descartes is the simplest form of reference frame. In Cartesian coordinate system we consider three mutually perpendicular axes, X , Y , Z and measure the distances from the origin in order to specify the position of an object. In this case the position of the object can be specified as (x,y,z). If we wish to specify the position or an event, also in terms of time then the object is described by the coordinates(x,y,z,t).

Types of Reference Frames :inertial Frame of Reference

There are two types of reference frames

(i) Inertial frame of reference

(ii) Non- inertial frame of reference.

Explanation for Inertial Frame of Reference:

An inertial reference frame is defined as a coordinate system in which Newton's laws of motion hold good. In general, a frame which is at rest is called an inertial frame of reference. The frame that moves with a uniform velocity with respect to another fixed inertial frame is also an inertial frame of reference. In this frame, the acceleration of a body is caused by real forces.

A laboratory frame of reference which is fixed to the earth is considered as an inertial reference frame and is used to describe the motion of the bodies present on the surface of the earth. On the other hand, to describe the motion of the earth and other planets, a frame at rest with respect to the sun or a fixed star will have to be taken as inertial frame of reference.
